UEFA Champions League Stats: PSG vs Club Bruges

PSG started in a 4-3-3 formation with a front three of Mbappe, Messi and Di Maria.

PSG used up all of their five substitutions to give enough rest to their players.

Club Bruges started in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Charles De Ketelaere as their number nine.

Club Bruges used only three of their substitutions as their European campaign came to an end.

PSG dominated the game as they had a very high xG of 2.64 and also had more attacking actions. They dominated 58% of possession of the ball throughout the game and also had a better PPDA than their opposition.

PSG scored three of their four goals in the first half before Bruges pulled one back in the 67th minute after a calm finish from Mats Rits. Messi then put the game to bed with a penalty in the 75th minute. Messi also had the highest xG on the pitch with his five shots on goal.

PSG had a total of 16 shots on goal and managed to keep nine on target. They had a high shot on target percentage of 56.25% and had an xG of 0.17 per shot.

Club Bruges did not go down without a fight and also had a number of attempts on goal. They did make Donnarumma work on some occasions and had five shots on target.

The xG timeline indicates that PSG completely dominated the first half and allowed Bruges only three shots on goal. Bruges displayed better performance in the second half as they attempted nine shots and also had a better xG.

Marco Verratti bossed the midfield for PSG as he completed most passes for his team and completed 21 passes towards Leo Messi.

Hans Vanaken completed the most number of passes for the Belgian side and made most passes to Clinton Mata.

PSG constructed most of their attacks from the right flank as they completed more passes on the same side. They also played more smart passes.

Club Bruges completed most of their passes on the left flank in the final third. The visitors attempted a total of 18 smart passes and 20 crosses into the final third.

PSG were most threatening when they attacked from the right flank as they had higher xT creation zones on this side of the pitch. Messi had the highest xT from the 74 passes he played.

Messi and Mbappe also generated a high xT from the dribbles they attempted as they were able to get into threatening positions.

Club Bruges did get a significant number of xT creation zones in the final third but they failed to convert the chances they created. Stanley Nsoki was their most efficient passer as he completed 46 passes with a pass accuracy of 93.48%.

Most of the Bruges attackers failed to make the right pass when they got into threatening positions. Noa Lang had the highest xT from his passes whereas Hans Vanaken had the highest xT from his dribbles.

PSG won most of the defensive duels they attempted on the left flank. Abdou Diallo won the most defensive duels and lost only two of his 12 duels.

PSG attempted only eight aerial duels and won six of these duels.

Since PSG had a lower PPDA, they attempted to win back the ball frequently. They won 37% of the 27 loose ball duels they attempted.

Club Bruges won 65.1% of their 83 defensive duels and Clinton Mata won the most duels as he won three of his 13 duels.

Neither team played a lot of long balls, and hence Bruges only attempted a total of eight aerial duels, winning three.
Club Bruges did not sit back and let PSG come towards them, instead they pressed the French team higher and attempted more loose ball duels in the final third. Noa Lang won three of his four loose ball duels.
