On Wednesday night, there was a match between PSG and Juventus in the UEFA Champions League. Juventus, who had already been eliminated and dropped down to the Europa League, faced the Parisians at their home stadium, the Allianz Arena. PSG, who were tied with Benfica at 14 points, were looking to win by a comfortable margin so they could top the league on goal margin.  

Manager Christophe Galtier lined up a strong formation of 4-3-1-2, with Mbappe and Messi starting in the lineup. Neymar was out of the match due to an injury.

UEFA Champions League 2022/23 Stats: Juventus vs PSG

Juventus went with a 3-5-1-1 formation, with Milik spearheading the attack. But they made changes after 74 minutes when Allegri switched to a 3-5-2 formation and finished the whole match with the same.

PSG went with a 4-3-1-2 formation, with Galtier starting a strong lineup in the form of Messi and Mbappe, who spearheaded the attacking lineup. They continued with the same formation for the whole duration of the match.

It’s rightly said that having high possession doesn’t win you matches. The same could be said for Juventus. They enjoyed the most possession with 50.11%. They had enjoyed 57% possession from 75 minutes onward. They had a slight dip in possession in the first 15 minutes when they only had 39% of the ball. That’s when Kylian Mbappe, taking advantage of the loss of possession, scored the first goal of the night.

PSG enjoyed a total of 49.89% of possession. They enjoyed the most possession of the ball in the first 15 minutes when they had 61%. However, during the first 16 to 45 minutes, they had a decent amount of possession, during which they conceded a goal at 39 minutes to Bonucci.

Juventus had a high amount of positional attack, bombarding from the left wing. They created 40 positional shots, with ten attempts.


PSG made positional attacks from all three sides. Messi, Mbappe, and co. bombarded Juventus’ defence. From the right wing, they created a little more, with 40%. Compared to Inter, the Parisians only created 16 positional attacks with only four attempted shots.

Juventus had been very wasteful in front of the goal. They attempted a total of 15 shots, with only one making Donnarumma bothered, and others they scored. They had shots on target with a measly 13.33%.

Compared to Juventus, PSG had fewer shots on target. But they had been lethal in front of the goal. They attempted seven shots, with five bothering the keeper. Out of it, they scored two goals courtesy of Mbappe. They had an accuracy rate of 71.43%.

Juventus had a high xG of 1.27. They had nine shots taken outside the penalty box.

PSG had an xG of 0.61, with Messi, Mbappe, and Ramos making Wojciech Szczęsny save his goal. Messi had the highest xG rate in the match. PSG had attempted five shots outside the penalty box.

 

Juventus made a total of 551 passes, of which they were successful in making 496. They had a passing accuracy rate of 90.02%. Sandro created the most cohesive channel with Kostic, Bonucci, Rabiot, and Locatelli. He and Kostic shared 39 passes, mostly on the right wing.

PSG made a total of 605 passes, of which they were successful in making 564. They had a pass% of 93.2%. Veratti was in the centre of the attack, as he was in the midst of the action. Veratti created a few pass networks, distributing play in the middle with Messi, Renato Sanches, and Vitinha. He exchanged most passes with Messi and was a contributor to Mbappe’s first goal. His smart pass to Messi made him assist Mbappe in scoring a goal. The Italian had a pass% of 94.1.

Juventus made a total of 67 total passes to the final third. They were successful in making 58 of them. They had a pass% of 86.57%. Alex Sandro and Fagioli made the most passes to the final third.

PSG made a total of 65 passes to the final third, out of which they were successful in making 60 of them. They had a pass% of 92.31%. Messi and Vitinha made the most passes.

 

Juventus had a tough time against PSG players, as they made the most recoveries with 73. They made 23 recoveries in the defensive third, 34 in the middle third, and 16 in the offensive third. Sandro, Cuadrado, and Locatelli had their hands full as they made the most recoveries.

PSG made a total of 59 recoveries, with Ramos, Veratti, and Vitniha making the most recoveries. They made 37 recoveries in the defensive third, 15 in the middle third, and only five in the offensive third.

Juventus contested a total of 72 defensive duels, winning 48 of them. They had a win% of 62.34%. Rabiot contested the more with 11.

PSG contested a total of 55 duels, winning 34 of them. They had a win% of 61.82%. Veratti won the most duels with eight.

Juventus contested the ball aerially 13 times, winning only five times. Alex Sandro and Rabiot won the most aerial duels with two each.

PSG contested 13 aerial duels, winning 8 of them. They had a win% of 61.54%. Ramos won the most duels with 3.

Juventus has been relegated to third place, so they will be playing in the UEFA Europa League. PSG, who were looking to win by a comfortable margin against the Old Lady, could muster only two goals. Benfica scored six against Maccabi Haifa. So we see them at the top of the table. PSG may draw with other group winners, such as Manchester City, Real Madrid, or Liverpool.
