Eric Choupo-Moting has revealed he turned down the opportunity to remain at Paris Saint-Germain this summer because Bayern Munich are the best club in Germany and that he is super happy to be returning to the country.
The 31-year-old – who appears to have a super agent – has gone from relegated Stoke City to the two latest sides to reach the UEFA Champions League final in 2020 in a two-year spell. Bettors can feel as though they can experience the highs the striker has felt in recent years. There is no denying the African forward did well during his time at the Parc des Princes, though. He helped them to win a couple of Ligue 1 titles, whilst he also lifted the Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue trophies as well as a runners-up medal in the UEFA Champions League last season.
A Cameroon international, the striker helped the team reach the final with his performance in the earlier stage of the competition as he managed to hit the winning goal against Atalanta BC in order for them to progress to the semi-finals.
PSG were said to be keen to keep him at the club for another year, however Choupo-Moting revealed he had numerous offers and his mind was instantly made up when he found out Bayern Munich had been in touch with his agent about a one-year deal.
“Paris wanted me to stay, but I turned them down. There were some interesting offers. My choice was made as soon as Bayern contacted my agents,” Choupo-Moting told the media, via GOAL.
“It wasn’t a shock they came in for me, but it’s a huge honour. They’re the Champions League holders, the biggest team in Germany. It’s a great league. Munich is a beautiful city. I am super happy.”
The Cameroonian has played second-fiddle to superstars such as Neymar Jr, Kylian Mbappe and Edinson Cavani and has revealed he is expected to play the same role at the Allianz Arena this season, providing cover for Robert Lewandowski.
“There were conversations with the coach, he made it clear to me that he would be happy if I came. We are not talking about a major role,” he continued.
“Everyone knows that at Bayern there is Lewandowski at the forefront. But each player is important in the project”.
Choupo-Moting could make his debut for Bayern Munich when they take on Duren Merzenich in a Cup tie on Thursday.
