Gunners March On: European Success Paves Way for Palace Cup Tie

Arsenal’s relentless momentum shows no signs of slowing down. Fresh off a thoroughly professional 2-0 second-leg victory over Bayer Leverkusen, the Gunners have confidently secured their spot in the Champions League quarter-finals. Despite the German outfit starting with a flash of early confidence, they were quickly suffocated by the home side’s dominance, struggling to carve out any genuine opportunities.

Eberechi Eze set the tone in the first half, breaking the deadlock with a perfectly placed strike that left Leverkusen keeper Janis Blaswich with no chance. Following the interval, Arsenal kept up the pressure. Leandro Trossard came agonizingly close to extending the lead, curling a powerful effort just wide of the top right corner. The decisive blow eventually arrived shortly after the hour mark through Declan Rice, who doubled the advantage and effectively killed the tie.

Late Drama and Looking Ahead

Leverkusen occasionally threatened on the counter, with players like Alejandro Grimaldo and Robert Andrich trying to spark a revival from distance. Aleix Garcia also whipped a dangerous cross in towards Patrik Schick, but the Arsenal defence stood resolute. Even when the hosts slightly dropped their intensity late on, they rarely looked troubled. David Raya was called into action right at the death, producing a superb stretching save to deny Montrell Culbreath, while a Jarell Quansah header earlier flew just wide. Kai Havertz actually thought he had bagged a third against his former club, though the referee swiftly chalked it off for a handball following a VAR review.

With Leverkusen officially dispatched, Mikel Arteta’s side will face Sporting Lisbon in the April quarter-finals. The Portuguese club earned their place after pulling off an astonishing 5-0 victory over Bodö/Glimt, overturning a 3-0 first-leg deficit.

A Quick Turnaround

European exploits aside, the domestic schedule offers absolutely no breathing room. Both Arsenal and Crystal Palace were back in Premier League action on Saturday evening. While the Gunners scraped a gritty 1-0 win away at Everton courtesy of a Viktor Gyokeres penalty, Palace suffered a damaging defeat at Leeds United.

The remarkably quick turnaround ahead of their Carabao Cup quarter-final clash at the Emirates this Tuesday will undoubtedly test both squads. For Arsenal, the motivation is clear. They are aiming to reach the semi-finals of the competition for the third time in five years, desperate to experience their first final since 2018.

Eagles Grounded by Injury Woes

This fixture arguably presents a far steeper hill to climb for Crystal Palace. Oliver Glasner’s side travel to north London grappling with a rapidly escalating injury crisis, a problem only magnified by the physical toll of their weekend trip to Elland Road.

The Eagles are certainly hunting for cup magic. They enjoyed a triumphant run in the FA Cup last season, ultimately lifting the trophy. Their League Cup fortunes, however, have been entirely bleak by comparison. They haven’t reached the semi-finals since 2012, and their journey last year was brought to an abrupt end at this exact stage by none other than Arsenal.

To compound Glasner’s growing headache, he will be without the services of Ismaila Sarr. The dynamic winger is currently unavailable due to his Africa Cup of Nations commitments, with his Senegal side scheduled to kick off their tournament campaign against Botswana on Tuesday. Faced with a depleted opponent, Arsenal might just have the stroke of luck they need to book their ticket to the last four.
