Slot’s Reds Silence Doubters with Resounding Double Victory

After the bitter sting of a last-gasp 3-2 defeat to AFC Bournemouth, Arne Slot found himself navigating a rather turbulent period. The last few months have undoubtedly been a challenge for the Dutchman, especially following the euphoria of securing the Premier League title in his maiden year. His squad desperately needed a massive week to get their campaign back on track, and they delivered exactly that, emphatically sweeping aside both Galatasaray and Newcastle United.

Ekitike Rubs Salt in Magpies’ Wounds

The crowning moment of this domestic resurgence came under the Anfield lights, where Liverpool dismantled Newcastle 4-1. Former Magpies transfer target Hugo Ekitike was the chief architect of their downfall, striking twice in a matter of minutes to turn the game entirely on its head.

Initially, it looked as though Liverpool’s defensive fragilities might cost them again. Anthony Gordon edged the visitors into the lead in the 36th minute, slipping a textbook finish past Alisson into the far corner to register his first open-play Premier League goal in 33 matches. However, that joy was remarkably short-lived. Following Alexander Isak’s £125 million British-record move to Merseyside—a stint now interrupted by a broken leg—Ekitike has seamlessly stepped up as Liverpool’s main man. He made no mistake from inside the penalty area just before half-time, before producing a remarkably smart finish with the outside of his boot a mere two minutes later. It was a quickfire brace that hit double figures for the season and served as a harsh reminder to a Newcastle side that had heavily pursued his signature over the summer.

Fabulous Florian Finds His Feet

If Ekitike has been red-hot, Florian Wirtz is now genuinely reaching boiling point. After a challenging introduction to English football, the German international is showing every inch of the world-class talent supporters were promised.

Jiving through a sea of black and white shirts, Wirtz teed up Ekitike’s opener with exquisite footwork that was entirely befitting of a primetime Saturday night television broadcast. He later added the cherry on top by grabbing his sixth goal in 11 appearances. There is absolutely no doubt that Wirtz has truly arrived on the Premier League stage.

A Midweek European Masterclass

This weekend’s domestic triumph was preceded by a relentless midweek demolition of Galatasaray, where the Reds cruised to a comfortable 4-0 victory. It was a match characterised by sheer offensive dominance, with Dominik Szoboszlai opening the scoring in the 24th minute.

Following the interval, Liverpool completely overwhelmed the Turkish giants. A precise pass into space allowed Ekitike to double the advantage on 50 minutes. Shortly after, a poor clearance from goalkeeper Uğurcan Çakır fell kindly for Ryan Gravenberch, who comfortably tapped home a third. The fixture wasn’t without its chaotic moments, however. A lengthy stoppage occurred when Galatasaray’s Noa Lang suffered a severe cut from an advertising hoarding, eventually leaving the pitch on a stretcher to be replaced by Mauro Icardi. Liverpool also saw two further goals chalked off, including an Alexis Mac Allister strike ruled out for a foul on the goalkeeper, and a Wilfried Singo own goal ruled out for offside against Jeremie Frimpong.

The Return of the King

Mohamed Salah’s involvement against Galatasaray was a rollercoaster in its own right. Having kept his spot in the starting XI after starring for Morocco at the Africa Cup of Nations, the winger initially cut a frustrated figure. He saw a penalty saved, struck the crossbar with a seemingly simple chance, and was repeatedly thwarted by a phenomenal goalkeeping display from Çakır.

Yet, he eventually found his breakthrough in the 61st minute, unleashing a trademark left-footed strike into the far corner. Unfortunately, his evening ended prematurely shortly after when he requested a substitution due to a physical issue, making way for Cody Gakpo. While he may not be back to his absolute explosive best just yet, he has registered three assists in as many Premier League games and is clearly playing with a smile on his face once more.
